Colombia is a beautiful country in the northwest of South America. And finally, you can visit it without fear. That was different a few years ago, especially because of the drug cartels that virtually all of Colombia held in their hands. Today the country is at its best. If you fancy a hustle and bustle, the best place to stay is in one of the many new stylish hotels in the cities, for example in Medellín, Bogota, and in the old colonial town of Cartagena, which is located by the sea. Life rages there, and not just on the wonderfully warm nights.
Medellín is considered a backpacker metropolis. No wonder there are many cheap hostels in which, just like in the whole city, you can still feel a lot of the time when the powerful drug boss Pablo Escobar ruled here. His former home is now a museum. Speaking of museums: the city is incredibly creative. Everywhere you can buy art from aspiring artists.
The most famous Inca site in Colombia is Teyuna. The nice thing: You can see the “lost city” almost undisturbed. But that’s not because Teyuna has nothing to offer, but because the city in the jungle can only be reached on a multi-day march. These exertions are worthwhile, however, because the complex from the 9th century is huge: there are more than 160 terraces that remind of the Peruvian Machu Picchu.
When to go The dry season is most pleasant between July and August and between December and March. But like everywhere else, these times have the disadvantage that most tourists then explore the country
